The end to Jeeps Peugeot transmission problems
If you are one of the lucky people who own a jeep wrangler that was equipped with a Peugeot transmission you will be happy to learn if you have not heard that there is a great kit that will fix your problems. One company has come up with a kit that involves replacing the Peugeot unit with a much more stout and easily repairable new venture 3550. We recently installed a kit for a customer and will go over the installation in this article and review how nice the install went.
The NY-3550 is a great replacement and boasts a 4.01:1 first gear and has a 22% over drive that is great for use on the highway with 4.10 or 4.56 ring and pinion gears. This kit also replaces the internal hydraulic slave cylinder with an external unit, which can be serviced without having to remove the transmission. Lastly one of the great benefits of this kit is that very few modifications are required to complete the installation. In fact we spent more time dealing with difficult manifold studs and striped shifter boot screw holes than we did actually installing the transmission and bell housing.
In order to install the nv3550 the transfer case needs to have the input shaft changed to accept the larger 23-spline shaft from the transmission. While doing this it is a good time to do an overhaul of transfer case assembly by putting a fresh set of bearings, seals, worn chains or otherwise abused and neglected parts. We took advantage of this by installing a 231-maskit along with a damaged rear bearing retainer. Otherwise this unit was in good condition and just needed the standard overhaul parts.
The installation is a very easy conversion and is only slightly more complicated than swapping in an ax-15 gearbox. The kit will come with all the brackets, hydraulic lines, bolts, shifters ect that is required. The transmission even comes filled with gear oil. So if you want to replace your tired old Pequot transmission this kit could work nicely.
s a note to mention the unit does have a distinctive sound in
certain driving conditions. The unit produces a gear mesh sound
if the engine is turning at very low rpms. The sound is common
in newer hd trucks but it is a little louder in a jeep with poorly
sound insulated transmission tunnel. This customer was not pleased
with the sound but is willing to live with it, as it is only
prevalent off idle and when he is accelerating in the wrong gear.
Overall the owner of this jeep was very happy with the improvements
that this conversion kit made to his jeep.
